What It Actually Costs To Study In The UK From Nigeria In 2026

Search for the cost of studying in the UK and you will mostly find figures in rupees, aimed at Indian applicants, or a bare tuition number with nothing else attached. If you are budgeting from Nigeria, in naira, working out what a UK degree actually costs you before you arrive is harder than it should be. This piece builds that full number, honestly, including the parts that most guides leave out.

This is a cost-planning piece, not a funding guide. It will not tell you where to borrow money or compare lenders. It will tell you what to actually save for, and roughly how much, so you can plan with real numbers rather than a tuition figure that is only part of the picture.

Start With What The UK Visa Itself Requires You To Prove

Before you think about your own budget, the Home Office has a fixed number it requires you to show as part of your Student visa application, known as the maintenance requirement. From 11 November 2025, this is £1,529 a month if your course is in London, or £1,171 a month outside London, for up to nine months (gov.uk, effective 11 November 2025, confirmed by UKCISA). This is a visa evidential requirement, a figure the Home Office wants to see in your bank account before granting the visa, not a recommendation for what you should actually plan to spend.

It is also about to rise again. A further Statement of Changes, HC 854, laid on 3 September 2026, confirms new figures from 30 November 2026: £1,570 a month for London and £1,203 a month outside London. If you are applying on or after that date, budget against the higher number, not the one currently circulating in most existing guides.

At today's exchange rate of roughly ₦1,830 to £1 (mid-market, mid-September 2026, moving daily, so check the live rate when you actually convert), the nine-month outside-London figure of £1,171 a month works out to around ₦2,143,000 a month, or close to ₦19.3 million for the full nine months, just for the maintenance requirement, before tuition, flights, or a single deposit.

The Full Cost Stack

Tuition. This varies enormously by university and subject, from roughly £13,000 to over £25,000 a year for a taught master's at most UK universities, with some London and specialist programmes higher still. There is no single "UK tuition" figure worth quoting, so treat any guide that gives you one flat number with suspicion, and get the actual figure from each university you are considering.

Student visa maintenance funds. As above: £1,171 to £1,529 a month depending on location, rising to £1,203 to £1,570 a month from 30 November 2026, for up to nine months.

Student visa application fee. Currently £558 for an out-of-country Student visa application.

Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). £776 a year at the discounted student rate, paid upfront for the full length of your visa, so a two-year master's visa means paying roughly £1,552 in one go at the point of application, not spread across the two years.

Flights. Lagos or Abuja to a UK city typically runs from roughly £500 to £900 return depending on season and airline, though one-way fares for an initial move can be cheaper if booked well ahead.

Accommodation deposit and first month's rent. UK student accommodation, university halls or private, generally asks for a deposit plus the first month upfront before you move in, commonly £1,000 to £2,000 combined depending on the city and type of housing.

First-month setup costs. A UK bank account, a local SIM, basic kitchen and bedroom essentials if you are self-catering, and incidental costs in your first weeks add up faster than most students expect. Budgeting an additional £300 to £500 for this is realistic.

Add these together, even before tuition, and the non-tuition cost of a nine-month to one-year UK stay comfortably exceeds £12,000 to £15,000 outside London, before you have paid a single term's fees. In naira terms at today's rate, that is roughly ₦22 million to ₦27 million just to get yourself set up and prove you can support yourself, on top of whatever your university charges.

The Naira Number That Matters Most: The Exchange Rate Itself

Every naira figure in this piece has a shelf life measured in weeks, not years. The pound to naira rate has moved meaningfully over the past year, and it is realistically the single biggest variable in your entire budget, larger in effect than most of the individual cost lines above. A rate move of even 5 percent between when you start saving and when you actually transfer money can shift your total naira cost by hundreds of thousands of naira on a single semester's living costs.

The honest planning approach is not to fix on one naira number and treat it as final. It is to build your budget in pounds first, using the actual sterling figures above, and convert at the live rate close to when you are actually transferring funds, building in a buffer of at least 10 percent for movement between now and then.

Why This Gap Exists In The First Place

Most UK and study-abroad cost content is built for an Indian audience, priced in rupees, with application forms that assume a +91 phone number by default. Nigerian-focused platforms tend to cover scholarship listings well but rarely build a full, dated cost breakdown for a specific destination. That leaves a genuine gap for anyone budgeting from Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt rather than Mumbai or Delhi, and it is the gap this piece is trying to close.

Turning This Into Your Own Number

The figures above are a template, not your answer. Your actual total depends on your specific university, city, course length and lifestyle. Rather than trying to hold nine separate line items in your head, or in a WhatsApp note, build your own version with the Financial Calculator, a planning tool for working out your real total in your own currency, based on your actual choices rather than a generic example.

Once you have a realistic number, the next question is which UK universities your grades and that budget can actually reach. NovaMatch matches your profile against real university options, so you are choosing a shortlist based on where you fit, not just where you have heard of.

A note on this piece: Figures given here are estimates only and change by course, institution, intake and personal circumstances. Exchange rates move daily; the rate used here is a snapshot from mid-September 2026 and will not match the rate on the day you transfer money. Verify current tuition and visa costs directly with your chosen university and with gov.uk before finalising a budget.
